Shadow Work

(for the lunar eclipse)

I look at you
and see my self

You look at me
and see your self

We look into our mirrors
and find a stranger

April Love Prompt: Shadows

This year I’m celebrating National Poetry Month by combining  NaPoWriMo’s daily poetry challenge with Susannah Conway’s April Love daily photo prompts on Instagram. Each day of April, you will observe the same photo in my Instagram feed on the righthand sidebar that you see in my blog post along with an instapoem. We shall find out at the end of the month whether this was a brilliant career move, sheer laziness or a fool’s errand.

Until then, care to join me in these creative waters where even fools fear to tread? The water’s fine.

  1. What a great few lines! The last had me bouncing back to the first. The structure of this makes the meaning sort of fold in on itself. A subtle echo of the yin-and-yang quality of the photo. Very nice indeed.

  2. In your last line, you express so well something I think increasingly often as I age. Your photo is incredible with so many different substances and textures expressed in parts and the whole.

    1. It’s true that I couldn’t have written this poem when I was young. And I’m still working on the stranger in the mirror, perhaps for the rest of my life. The photo is from a few years ago and one of my favorites.
